Botswana’s Living Water Wilderness

The Okavango Delta is a rare inland wetland in northern Botswana, where the Okavango River spreads into the Kalahari Basin instead of reaching the sea. This UNESCO World Heritage Site covers wide channels, islands, floodplains, and reed beds filled with wildlife. Visitors come for mokoro rides, game drives, walking safaris, birding, and peaceful stays in one of Botswana’s most special safari regions for deeply natural safari days.

Okavango Delta Birdlife

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the Okavango Delta is from July to October, when floodwaters are high, and wildlife gathers near dry land.

May and June bring cooler days, rising water levels, and lovely conditions for mokoro rides, boating, and relaxed wildlife viewing across calm channels.

September and October are hotter, but game sightings can be strong as animals stay close to permanent channels and water sources.

November to April is greener and quieter, with summer rain, newborn animals, and excellent birding as migrant species arrive across the wetlands there each year.

Wildlife And Birdlife

The Okavango Delta is home to elephants, buffalo, lions, leopards, wild dogs, hippos, crocodiles, zebras, giraffes, cheetahs, and several antelope species.

Rhinos have also returned to parts of the delta, adding Big Five interest to this rich Botswana wildlife area.

Birdlife is outstanding, with more than 400 recorded species, including herons, bee-eaters, fish eagles, kingfishers, and Pel’s fishing owl.

Wet-season birding is especially rewarding, as migrant birds arrive and the green landscape comes alive with calls, color, and movement throughout lagoons, floodplains, channels, and nearby islands.
