Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Kafue National Park is from July to October, when wildlife viewing is at its most reliable.

Busanga Plains usually opens during the dry season, bringing chances to see lechwe, wildebeest, zebra, lions, and buffalo.

June to August is cooler, especially in the mornings and evenings, so warm layers are useful on game drives.

November to April brings rain, green scenery, and better birding, but some areas become difficult to reach after heavy seasonal flooding around remote northern camps and floodplain routes inside the park seasonally.

Wildlife and Birdlife

Kafue National Park has high wildlife diversity, with elephants, hippos, crocodiles, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, wild dogs, zebras, and many antelope species.

Busanga Plains is known for red lechwe, wildebeest, puku, lions, buffalo, and wide floodplain sightings during the dry months.

The park has excellent birdlife, with around 500 species across rivers, wetlands, woodland, grassland, and forest habitats.

Birdwatchers may see fish eagles, saddle-billed storks, kingfishers, bee-eaters, waterbirds, raptors, turacos, doves, guinea fowl, and seasonal migrants across different parts of Kafue during longer game drives and guided walks.
